Best Face Masks Material Recommended by WHO – World Health Organization

The quality fabric for face masks is always intended for use in the community or public settings. Where are rapidly increasing cases of COVID 19, it has becoming obligatory to tighten individual’s security by not only wearing face masks but also making them polluted and germ-free by either disposing them after one use or wearing a washable face mask for repetitive use

As physical distancing cannot be maintained in places like grocery stores, public transport, so wearing fabric masks isn’t a protective tool as they’re much effective in protecting you against the virus. The fabric masks are intended for source control.

Let’s suppose for a second you’re a source and a mask is there to protect those around you, here face masks work as a barrier between your mouth, nose, and the surrounding environment. Always remember that mask must be used as a part of a comprehensive package of other infection control measure like; physical distancing, hand hygiene, and respiratory etiquettes

However, here the major question comes; is there any particular fabric face mask material recommended by World Health Organization? According to a recent study evaluated in this matter, the effectiveness of various types of materials has been concluded which are used to make protective face masks

It was identified that face mask should ideally have three layers;

Outer layer – The outer layer of the face mask should be a hydrophobic material. This means that fabric will repel droplets and moisture. This can be made of synthetic material like; polyester, or polyester with a cotton blend. It can be easily found in any knit pattern

Inner layer – the inner layer that comes in direct contact with our face has to be a hydrophilic material, as it can easily absorb droplets from your exhaled breath. The best example is cotton. Always choose a light color mainly white which can help determined when it is easily soiled or wet

Middle layer –This can be an insert or can be another fabric layer. This middle layer should go into the pocket between the inner and outer layers, and it should act as a filter. The middle layer should be composed of hydrophobic material. This should ideally be a strip of polypropylene fabric which is a spun bound, non-woven fabric material

These three are highly recommended layers to provide optimal filtration and breathability. There are other types of materials as well that can be used for making ultimate protection face masks.

One thing more we must remember, that importance of any fabric material is counted when we design a fabric mask to ensure it’s both effective at containing droplets, and allow you to breathe easily. Besides, the fiber of fabric should also be balanced between;

  • Not to lose – This would allow the travel of droplets through the material
  • Not to tight – this can restrict the ability to breath

   How to Wash Mask Fabric?

Since these face masks or can say washable face masks are intended for reuse, it has been strictly recommended them washing daily after a day’s use.

A tip: If you’re using a middle layer as an insert for the filter, then make sure you remove it before laundering and insert a new filter while using a clean mask, otherwise you can also choose to make a three-layer mask without a removable middle layer. And, find the material that can withstand the highest possible temperature even while washing
